The RI Red gained its official state distinction in a 1954 vote, beating out, among other competitors, the ruby-throated hummingbird*.

The RI Red was first bred in Little Compton in the 1850’s. The chickens were valued for their dependable egg-laying abilities. The cross-breeding of local hens with those from Asia created the Rhode Island Red and made Little Compton farmers so productive that the town was an international poultry capital in the late 1800s and early 1900s**.

Here’s some sports trivia: The Rhode Island Reds was also the name of a former professional hockey team in the state.***

So the Rhode Island Red has a proud, and productive, history in our state. Its latest distinction is to grace the official Rhode Island WordCamp logo. As you check out our website (https://2015.rhodeisland.wordcamp.org/), take a moment to appreciate the logo at the top of each page. Just like our state bird, the Rhode Island WordCamp and its attendees have a proud history and a record of being productive members of society.

Follow us:
https://twitter.com/WordCampRI

https://www.facebook.com/wordcampri

meetup.com/WordPressRI

* (according to ri.gov)

** (according to research done by a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and presented on sakonnethistorical.org/)

*** (ri.gov)

Did you notice our WordCamp Rhode Island logo at the top of the page? It’s the Rhode Island Red hen.
