{"id":853,"date":"2016-08-14T22:01:57","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T22:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2016.rhodeisland.wordcamp.org\/?p=853"},"modified":"2016-08-14T23:03:35","modified_gmt":"2016-08-14T23:03:35","slug":"rhode-island-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rhodeisland.wordcamp.org\/2016\/rhode-island-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhode Island English"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>International Friendship Day is celebrated in August.<\/li>\n<li>Our WordCamp friends in Belfast are holding their first WordCamp the same weekend Rhode Island is holding its fifth annual WordCamp!<\/li>\n<li>We both speak English, but each with our own spin on it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So to honor (or should I say honour) our international friends, during this month of International Friendship Day, here\u2019s a guide to Rhode Island English.<br \/>\nAre you watching TV (or should I say \u201cthe telly\u201d) and\u00a0want to\u00a0change the channel right from where you are sitting?\u00a0 Just use the \u201cclicker.\u201d\u00a0 Why do that?\u00a0 Because it\u2019s \u201cwicked\u201d easy.\u00a0 (Also pronounced wikkit.)<br \/>\nIf our Irish friends come to the Ocean State and want a cold ice cream drink, do not order a \u201cmilk shake.\u201d\u00a0 In RI a milk shake is milk shaken with syrup.\u00a0 If you\u2019d like ice cream in it, ask for a \u201ccabinet\u201d (yes, like the furniture!) or a frappe (pronounced \u201cfrap\u201d).<br \/>\nWould you like a healthier cold drink?\u00a0 Water, perhaps?\u00a0 You get that from the \u201cbubbler\u201d (pronounced bubbla.)<br \/>\nYou see, in RI we add Rs where there are none, and to make up for those extras we take away Rs where there should be some.\u00a0 So for instance, we have a lot of \u201chot.\u201d\u00a0 You know, the organ\u00a0that pumps blood and holds love.\u00a0 However, if you have a wonderful concept to explain, let everyone know about your \u201cidear.\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s mealtime and you\u2019d like to invite someone to join you, just ask \u201cjeet?\u201d\u00a0 (did you eat?)\u00a0 If that person has not yet, they might respond \u201cno joo?\u201d (no, did you?)<br \/>\nRhode Island has the nickname \u201cThe Ocean State.\u201d\u00a0 And yes, we are the smallest state in the USA.\u00a0 We do not have an official animal, but we do have an official bird: The Rhode Island Red (chicken).\u00a0 First bred right here.\u00a0\u00a0The official state fish (would I kid you?)\u00a0is the Striped Bass, adopted by the state\u2019s General Assembly in July of 2000.<br \/>\nThe state drink is coffee milk, as in milk with coffee flavored syrup stirred in.\u00a0 (Pul-eez, chocolate milk is so pass\u00e9.)<br \/>\nOur state shell is the quahaug (pronounced co-hog).\u00a0 What\u2019s that you say?\u00a0 You think I left out a word?\u00a0 You think our official state shell<em>fish<\/em> is the quahaug?\u00a0 No, my friend, you under-estimate Rhode Islanders.\u00a0 It is the shell of the shellfish which is official.\u00a0 We have an official state shell.\u00a0 And I strongly suspect we are the only state in the Union with that distinction!<br \/>\nSo we wish our WordCamp siblings in Belfast a successful first WordCamp and look forward to the day you can come to visit us!\u00a0 We\u2019ll have a wikkit good time!<\/p>\n<p>WordCamp RI will be held September 30 and October 1 at the\u00a0New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich.<\/p>\n<p>WordCamp Belfast will be held 1 and 2 October at the Peter Froggatt Centre in Queens University Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>Did you notice my bi-lingual skills in presenting the dates of the two WordCamps?\u00a0 In RI we&#8217;re wikkit smaht.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Friendship Day is celebrated in August.
